Catfish Prevention Guide

Last updated: 12 August 2026

Catfishing, romance scams and AI-generated fake profiles are more common than ever. Here is a quick, practical guide to spotting the warning signs early — and protecting yourself while you wait for LoveProof to launch.

1. Common warning signs

  • Too perfect, too fast: They say all the right things and escalate intimacy quickly before you have met in person or video-chatted.
  • They avoid live video: Excuses for not showing their face in real time are one of the biggest red flags.
  • They move the conversation off-platform: Pushing you to WhatsApp, Telegram or email early can make it harder for dating apps to detect them.
  • They ask for money, gifts or crypto: No genuine romantic interest will ask you to send funds, pay fees or invest on their behalf.
  • Photos look too polished or inconsistent: Glamorous modelling shots, mismatched backgrounds, or the same photo appearing on multiple profiles can indicate stolen or AI-generated images.
  • Their story keeps changing: Jobs, locations, family details and life events that shift over time are a sign of a fabricated identity.

2. Quick checks you can do today

  • Reverse image search their profile photos in Google Images or TinEye to see if they appear elsewhere under a different name.
  • Search their name and details on social media. Look for real friends, history, tagged photos and activity that spans years, not weeks.
  • Ask for a quick video call and watch for excuses. Even five minutes face-to-face removes most photo-based deception.
  • Keep the chat on the dating app until you are confident the person is genuine. Scammers often push to move conversations away from safety systems.

3. What to do if something feels off

  • Trust your gut. If it feels rushed, pressured or too good to be true, pause the conversation.
  • Do not share personal documents, intimate photos, financial details or your home address with someone you have not verified.
  • Stop sending money immediately and report the profile to the dating platform. If you have already sent funds, contact your bank and local police.
  • Talk to someone you trust. Scammers often try to isolate their targets; a second opinion can help you spot manipulation.

4. How LoveProof will help

Quick reminder

If someone online is asking for money, claiming an emergency, or pushing you to keep secrets from friends and family, treat it as a scam until proven otherwise.
